Planning a Move After 47 years… Oh My!
Planning a move? Let us help you. Especially if you’ve lived there a long time. We understand.
I completed a transaction with some incredible home sellers who had been referred to me by their financial advisor. Numerous stories of the wonderful memories made in their home of 47 years warmed my heart and soul. These sellers took about 4 years to contemplate moving to one-level living from their two-story home with a one-acre yard that they maintained for 47 years!
At the closing, the young couple buying their home asked the sellers “What makes a person stay in their home for 47 years?”. The seller’s eyes started to well up as they answered, “It’s home, it’s the memories, we love the area, the neighbors and the thought of moving scared us to death. Until a new development with homes that fit our needs opened, we had nowhere to go. Now that we have gone through this process with Paul, we look back and wish we would have done it years ago.”
Every client I have ever helped sell a lifetime home has made similar comments after the fact. It’s easy to understand all the emotions involved in planning a move after all those years and why people hesitate to leave what is so comfortable. I find it so interesting that people in these situations consistently comment about the fear of moving. I’d argue that it’s not necessarily fear holding people back, but more of feeling overwhelmed by the thought of moving. Where will I move? Will I like it there? How much money will my house sell for? Will I need to spend any money to get my home ready? Can I afford to move? No one will give a mortgage to someone my age. The list of questions almost seems endless.
These are all normal questions that need to be answered when planning a move from a lifetime home. Unfortunately, these questions tend to be easier to ignore than to investigate. Fear of being overwhelmed is something you can control with proper real estate planning.
If you have spent the last several years contemplating a move but aren’t quite ready, why not spend the next several years preparing for it? We would love to sit down and have a conversation about your plans to move in the future, whether it’s next year or in the next decade.
It’s difficult to commit to a home sale after all those years, but it’s not difficult to commit to a conversation with the Homes Sold for More™ Team. Get the answers and help you need to start the process now.
